ReFarm Project

Building resilient farms for a changing climate

Climate change presents one of the greatest challenges facing European agriculture. Farmers are increasingly confronted with extreme weather events, soil degradation, biodiversity loss and changing growing conditions. At the same time, they are expected to produce food sustainably while protecting natural resources.

ReFarm supports this transition by helping farmers make informed decisions about Nature-Based Solutions that strengthen resilience, improve ecosystem health and secure the future of farming.

Why ReFarm?
Turning challenges into opportunities

Building climate-resilient farms requires more than individual solutions. It requires knowledge, practical experience and collaboration.

Although many Nature-Based Solutions have already proven their value, farmers often face barriers when deciding which measures are suitable for their specific conditions. ReFarm addresses this challenge by bringing together research, education and practical farming experience to make sustainable solutions more accessible, understandable and easier to implement.

Through a combination of training, demonstration farms and decision support tools, the project helps translate scientific knowledge into practical action.

What are Nature-Based Solutions?
Working with nature, not against it

Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) are farming practices that strengthen natural ecosystems while supporting productive and resilient agriculture.

Examples include:

🌳 Agroforestry systems

🌼 Flower strips and biodiversity measures

🌱 Reduced tillage practices

💧 Improved water retention

🌾 Healthy soil management

These approaches help improve biodiversity, store carbon, reduce erosion and increase farms’ resilience to climate change.
